This page is to detail the 6 speed
conversion process. I purchased a kit online but it was only about
60%. I had to modify the brackets, and
there was a whole laundry list of things I had to do different.
Things the kit did not include:
Low profile reverse switch
CAG solenoid plug
Harness
Issues with the kit:
Corvette Z06 Shifter box was warped from
welding it to the bracket, so I had to send it off to be machined square. It was also mounted on the modified Z06
torque tube in the wrong place.
Transmission brackets left too much margin
for error for installation
The torque tube bearings that were
installed were low RPM bearings, and also installed with a punch, denting the
seal. I removed the bearings and found
the torque tube full of metal shavings and grit from the process to shorten and
modify it for the 928. It’s a good thing
I dismantled the torque tube or I would have had bearing failure in a very
short time. Others that purchased the 6
speed conversion or had it installed by the shop that made them had failures
within 2000 miles.
Things to keep in mind:
Corvette shifter box comes with cheap
plastic bushings
Corvette shifters box is small enough to
fit into the shifter hole in the 928 tunnel, only if it is mounted on the
torque tube in the correct place, but most of the shifters are not. Cut the hole large enough for the larger aftermarket
shifters as well, as access to the front bushing and the rear adjustment screw.
Corvette shifter levers are different than
the 928 shifter levers. If you want to
keep a factory 928 shifter, keep that in mind during your planning.
